Why I Do What I Do
Hi, I'm Whitney Teal. I'm a Chico native and have been working with students for over a decade. Throughout my years in education, I've noticed that many students don't struggle because they aren't capable—they struggle because they've lost confidence in their ability to learn.
I've always loved teaching math, but what I love most is helping students discover that they can do hard things. I believe students learn best when they feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and work through challenges without fear of getting it wrong. When students learn to be okay with the struggle and trust that growth comes through effort, they not only become stronger mathematicians, but more resilient learners.
That's why I created Discovery Nook: a place where students can build mathematical understanding while also developing confidence, perseverance, and problem-solving skills that extend far beyond the classroom. There is something truly special about watching a student go from "I can't do this" to "I figured it out." Helping students see their own potential through math is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
