Hey There

My name is Whitney Teal. I am a Chico native and have been in education for a decade now. As a homeschooling mama I am always looking for ways to enrich learning beyond a textbook. My goal is for my children to also build foundational skills in critical thinking, perseverance, and self confidence that will serve them throughout their lifetime. At Teal's Discovery Nook I strive to bring those skills and more to each of my classes.

All About Me

Every life experience has shaped my journey and lead me to where I am today. At the age of 5 I decided I wanted to become a teacher because I loved my Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Coria. However, by the time I was 17 my interests had changed to sewing and fashion. I went to Chico State and got my degree in Business,

Entrepreneurship with the goal of opening my own clothing store. After I graduated I started coaching soccer. It was a great job and I realized once again how much I loved teaching. So I went back to Chico State, got my teaching credential, and have been teaching ever since.

I have taught in a traditional public school, tutored Math, became a homeschool teacher with two different charters, and homeschool my own kids.

I am the mother of two wonderful boys, Paxton and Revan. Being a mom has greatly influenced my thoughts on education. I would say my educational style is a combination of Montessori, Waldorf, and Unschooling. I think it is important to educate the whole child. By encouraging curiosity and independence through hands on activities, we can create lifelong learners. This is my approach to homeschooling my own boys and it is the same approach I bring to my classes at Teal's Discover Nook.
